February / March Fishing Report for Gold Beach, Oregon. This report was taken by telephone from Mark Lottis, owner of Five Star Charters in Gold Beach. 541-247-0217. Mark was in the valley goose hunting when he gave this report...
"In spite of a rough cold start February turned into a great steelhead month. As the weather warmed and became more typical of February the catch improved. Final February steelhead numbers are as good as any recent year, and better than most.
March will continue to be a good steelhead month. The larger fish will be caught on the Elk and Sixes Rivers which close at the end of March.
Steelhead will continue to be caught on the Rogue into late April.
The big question in March is always "When will the first salmon be caught"? We'll let you know next month who it was. Most likely it will be a steelhead fisherman, and most likely it will happen between March 10th and 20th.
Ocean salmon fishing will start picking up north of Gold Beach near Port Orford and will move down the coast to Gold Beach.
Now that the weather is a bit more stable and easing off trips onto the ocean are more easily planned. Ling Cod is best March to May. We are approaching the best bottom fishing of the year.
For good fishing all year come to Gold Beach, Oregon.
